Baby Crystabel was born prematurely and at just 4 days old, underwent emergency surgery which resulted in a stoma. Her first year of life has been spent in and out of hospital. She has undergone multiple procedures, experienced complications, developed infections and faced ongoing medical challenges while doctors worked to understand the cause of her condition. Living with a stoma brought additional difficulties. Crystabel suffered painful skin reactions, frequent leaks and a post surgical hernia, making stoma care both challenging and distressing. For almost 11 months, her family relied on samples and the kindness of others to obtain the supplies she needed. Each bag change came with uncertainty, never knowing how long their supplies would last. The situation became even more difficult when Crystabel’s mum lost her job while caring for her daughter full time.
Earlier this year, the family finally received answers. Biopsy results confirmed Hirschsprung disease, a rare condition affecting the bowel. While the diagnosis provided clarity, Crystabel’s journey is not yet over and further surgery may still be required. When Footprints 2 Africa learned of the family’s situation, we were able to help thanks to the generosity of our donors, hospitals, stoma groups, supporters and volunteers. We provided Crystabel with a 2 year supply of stoma products and accessories, removing a significant burden from her family’s shoulders and allowing them to focus on her care. Her mum shared: “I cannot express just how much Footprints 2 Africa have been a blessing to our family. You will remain a part of our story now and forever. We are beyond grateful. Thank you for responding when I first reached out. I simply shot my shot with little to no expectations, yet you came through beyond expectation.”
As Crystabel prepares to celebrate her first birthday, her family can do so knowing she has the supplies she needs for the months ahead.
